Leo is Saved! Update on the Ginger Kitty from Göktürk

Saving Leo

We recently ran a story on the ginger kitty Leo. Leo was kicked out of an apartment by someone who was supposed to take care of him. But Leo ended up roaming the streets in the Göktürk Merkez area of Istanbul, Türkiye.

Kristina, the Croatian lady who had been taking care of Leo but had to move back to Zagreb and left Leo in the hands of the person who abandoned Leo, asked CatSwoppr to raise attention to Leo’s cause.

Lost and Found

Through our story and video recap, Kristina has gotten into contact with Ekin Erogllu who runs the İstanbul Kedi Pansiyonu, a cat hotel in Istanbul.

Luckily, with the help of Kristina, Ekin was able to find Leo in the Göktürk area and she retrieved him in good order. Healthy and happy, Leo was brought to the cat hotel of Ekin.

Kristina has now decided to bring Leo with her to Croatia, but the procedure to bring a cat from Turkey into the EU takes four months. Therefore, she is happy that Leo can stay at the cat hotel.

A Future Croatian Cat

As soon as Kristina got advice from the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, she began the adoption process for Leo.

At home in Zagreb, Kristina has a dog Nura, who tends to dislike cats, but Kristina is willing to take the risk and see how Nura responds.

If Leo eventually turns out to be an unfortunate match for Nura, Kristina will search for a new home for Leo in Croatia.

For now, Leo is in good hands of Ekin at the İstanbul Kedi Pansiyonu.

Addendum:

For all of those Croatian cat lovers who want to adopt a cat from Turkey, here are the conditions that must be met for a cat from Turkey to enter Croatia:

1. The cat is accompanied by the “owner” or an authorized person.

2. The cat is identified by a microchip.

3. The cat is vaccinated against rabies in accordance with the vaccine manufacturer’s instructions, which must comply with the validity requirements of Annex III of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013. Cats must be at least 12 weeks old on the day they are vaccinated against rabies, and at least 21 days must pass from the first vaccination before entering Croatia.

4. The cat must be accompanied by a veterinary certificate for the non-commercial movement of pets into the EU as prescribed in Part I of Annex IV of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 577/2013. The veterinary certificate accompanying the pet must correctly record the owner’s name and surname to prove ownership of the pet. The veterinary certificate is issued by veterinarians authorized by the competent authority of the third country from which the pets are coming and is valid for 10 days from the date of issue until the date of the documentation and identification check by customs officers at the entry point into Croatia.

5. A rabies antibody titration test must be carried out in accordance with Annex IV of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013, as follows:

• The test must be conducted on a sample taken by an authorized veterinarian at least 30 days after the vaccination date and no less than three months before the date of the animal’s relocation.

• The test must measure a rabies virus antibody level in serum equal to or greater than 0.5 IU/ml.

• The test must be carried out in an approved laboratory (the original laboratory result must accompany the veterinary certificate during travel). Therefore, for entry into the territory of the Republic of Croatia/European Union from the Republic of Turkey, after the rabies antibody titration test has been performed, a period of 3 months must pass from the date the blood sample for the titration test is taken until the date of the non-commercial movement of the animal.
