Frida Threepaw: The Story of Resilience and Full of Adventures

From the Streets of Athens

Frida's journey begins in November 2013 on the streets of Ilioupolis, a bustling suburb of Athens, Greece. Life on the streets had been unkind to Frida, a small calico cat with striking eyes. When the kind volunteers at the Ilioupolis Animal Welfare Union @zeil.gr found her, it was clear she had endured more than her fair share of hardships. Her back left leg had suffered a severe fracture that had gone untreated for too long. The injury had left her in pain and struggling to survive, but Sasha’s spirit, as they named her, remained unbroken.

The road to recovery was a challenging one. The veterinary team tried to save her leg with two surgeries, but the damage was too extensive. The final decision was made to amputate her leg, giving her a chance to live without pain, though with a new physical challenge. Despite everything, little Sasha/Frida  faced the world with quiet resilience.

A New Beginning in Greece

While Sasha was recovering at the shelter, a life-changing connection was about to be made. Ana, a compassionate and adventurous Spanish woman living in Greece, was browsing the internet one evening when she came across Sasha's story. There was something about Sasha’s gentle eyes and her story of survival that resonated deeply with Ana. Without hesitation, she decided she had to meet her.

A few days later, Ana visited the shelter where Sasha was staying. In Ana’s head, that little cat already had a new name: Frida, and she was already the missing piece in her heart. As soon as she laid eyes on the little cat, she knew this was the companion she had been searching for. Frida, shy but curious, allowed herself to be petted by Ana. It was a quiet moment of connection, and by the end of the visit, Ana was certain: Frida was coming home with her.

A week later, Saha left the shelter behind, the paperwork officially gave her the name she always should have had: Frida, and she  began her new life with Ana. The first day in her new home was overwhelming for Frida. She spent most of her time hiding under the bed, unsure of this new environment. But as night fell and the house grew quiet, Frida started to feel a little braver. At three in the morning, she let out her first “MEEEEAWW,” breaking the silence with her surprisingly loud voice. Ana was delighted—Frida was beginning to find her voice and her place in their home.

Frida’s very first picture at home

In the early days, Frida was cautious. She stayed close to the floor, avoiding the furniture and choosing to sleep next to Ana’s bed rather than on it. It was as if Frida wasn’t sure she was allowed to claim space in this new world. But Ana, ever patient and understanding, knew that Frida just needed time.

One evening, Ana decided to show Frida that she was welcome anywhere. She gently picked up the little cat and placed her on the bed, tucking her in beside her. Frida, though initially startled, quickly relaxed. It was a turning point—Frida began to understand that she was safe, loved, and had a place in this home. From then on, she often curled up beside Ana, content and warm.

A Life of Global Adventure of Ana and Frida

Ana’s life was anything but ordinary. As a global health professional, her career took her to different corners of the world. Just a month after adopting Frida, Ana was offered a position in Washington DC, and the adventure began.

On her way to the USA…Terrified, poor thing!

The move to the United States was the first of many relocations. From DC, Ana and Frida moved to Spain, then to the UK, and later to Malawi in Africa. Each new country brought its own set of challenges and discoveries for Frida, but she adapted remarkably well for a cat with a difficult past. Frida’s favorite place by far was Malawi. The warm climate, the lush garden, the neighbor’s cats, and the occasional chicken invasions all made for an exciting life. Frida loved to explore the garden, bask in the sun, and watch the world go by from the safety of her home.

Feeling finally safe and settle in DC

Moving around so much could have been stressful for any cat, but Frida took it in stride. With Ana by her side, she knew she was safe and loved no matter where they went. Their bond grew stronger with each move, rooted in trust and companionship.

In the photos you can see Frida on her way to Malawi in Africa. A princess travels business class! Just chilling out was her favorite thing to do there. For two years, Frida was absolutely filthy, and the happiest she’s ever been!

The Sunset Years in Switzerland

Now, at 12.5 years old, Frida finds herself in Geneva, Switzerland. Her life has slowed down, and she spends most of her days napping in cozy spots, watching the world through the window, and enjoying the quiet moments with Ana. The adventurous days of Malawi are behind her, but the memories remain, and she still purrs contentedly when Ana talks about their time there.

Still climbing up furniture, though!

Frida’s health is carefully monitored by Ana, who makes sure her senior cat is comfortable and happy. Despite her physical challenges—a missing leg and a bent ear—Frida has led a life full of love and care. She remains shy and strong-minded, preferring to give affection on her own terms. But when she does, it’s a special moment that Ana treasures.

Ana often tells Frida that she is the most perfect cat in the world, and Frida knows that, to Ana, this is the absolute truth. Their journey together, from the streets of Greece to the many countries they’ve called home, is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the deep bond between a human and her beloved cat.

A Bond Beyond Borders

Frida’s story is not just about survival—it’s about finding a home, a family, and a sense of belonging. It’s about the trust that was slowly built between a cat who had seen too much hardship and a human who was determined to give her the best life possible. Through all the moves and changes, one thing has remained constant: the deep connection between Frida and Ana.

As Frida enjoys her sunset years, she does so knowing she is loved unconditionally. Her journey is a beautiful reminder that even the most challenging beginnings can lead to the happiest of endings, and that love, in all its forms, can truly change a life.
