A Story on Cat Whisperer Debbie from Hout Bay, Cape Town

What Does that Meow Mean?

Have you ever looked at cats, wanting to know what they're trying to communicate with each meow? Cat Whisperer Debbie Caknis from Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, will share tips and tricks to better that bridge of communication with animals.

Let's Meet the Cat Whisperer

Debbie Caknis, a former nurse of 27 years experience who became fascinated with alternative healing and allopathic medicine, greets us from Hout Bay in Cape Town.

After some searching, she found her way to becoming a Reiki Master and now holds various Diplomas in Quantum Touch, Biochemical Medicine, Kinesiology, Crystal Healing, Hypnotherapy, Kundalini Yoga, Corporate Mentoring, and Animal Communication. While practicing Reiki, she found many people came to her with their animals, which spurred the chapter to communicate with animals.

Re-defining Communication

Communication could be considered a mental task because of the many thoughts which your mind plays like a movie while getting those ideas across. Debbie says that communication with cats needs a different approach than with humans. Debbie highlights the key ingredients for effective animal communication lie in opening your heart —speaking from the heart space— and utilizing visualization — imagining your message as a video playing in your mind while talking.

When asked to elaborate, she said: “Echo, a cat that I take care of, has a heart condition for which he needs medication, but he does not like taking the prescription. I explained to him that the medication would make it physically easier for him and that he would live longer. I also decided to get him a tracker - on his collar - I explained that if he had a stroke because of his weak heart, the tracker would help me find him faster.” Debbie mentioned that she looked Echo in the eyes and used both visual and verbal communication aids.

Meeting Echo the Cat

Eight years ago, Echo showed up at Debbie's house and ate her cat food, and then he would leave and do whatever he did. Debbie already had three cats living with her, so she did not mind another one popping in. After a few days of this routine, she placed a collar on him with a note addressed to his then-guardians, saying they need not to worry because he was eating her cat food. This routine continued until Echo decided to stay with Debbie.

Through animal communication, Debbie learned why he chose to stay with her. Echo told Debbie that he ran to her house because a dog at his former guardians was relentlessly chasing him—not playfully. Debbie accepted Echo’s request and relayed the message to his then-guardians. Debbie formally adopted Echo when his then-guardians decided to immigrate, and agreed that she would be Echo’s new caretaker.

A Typical Day for Debbie and Echo

Debbie says her days with Echo are somewhat of a routine, he wakes her at 4 AM, she puts on his collar and tracker, and then he goes on his morning walk and returns home at about 6 AM. Debbie will busy herself on her laptop with work while in bed.

When he returns he will eat some food, followed by his medication, and then do whatever he does for the rest of the day, and his curfew is at 10 PM when the doors are locked. It has been smooth sailing, except when he gets a bit bored and playfully challenges Debbie until it becomes annoying.

Interesting Encounters for the Cat Whisperer

A few years ago, a client named Angela approached cat whisperer Debbie, asking if she could track and find her cat Louis. Through mental tracking and telepathic communication, Louis showed Debbie images of where he was. He showed Debbie images of a big yard with a snake blocking its path and then darkness. Debbie assumed that the snake had bitten him.

However, after a few days, Debbie checked in with Louis, and this time he showed her images of other animals in what looked like a bigger yard. Debbie assumed that this was Louis' heaven. Debbie informed Angela of her findings, however, Debbie had a nagging suspicion that Angela should still leave the cat door open.

Luckily Angela did as suggested by Debbie. After a few days, Angela checked in and found Louis at home eating his food. Louis loved his freedom and independence, and his mom would not have given up until he was back home. So, basically Louis had actually lied a bit in his communication with Debbie regarding his whereabouts.

In another instance, client Shirley was considering euthanasia for her cat Bonnie because Bonnie's liver was deteriorating - as suggested by the vet. However, Bonnie was not ready to say goodbye to her cat pawrent Shirley. Debbie communicated the process of euthanasia to Bonnie, and Bonnie responded and asked if there were also other options available because she did not want euthanasia.

The vet informed Shirley that the surgery was risky and Bonnie might not survive. Nonetheless, Bonnie did not want to go gently into a farewell. So, Bonnie underwent the surgery, and needlessly to say it was a success, and both were happy with their decision to not do euthanasia.

You Too Can Be a Cat Whisperer.

If you want to strengthen your bond with your cat, Debbie recommends a sit-down with your beloved feline. Then you look them in the eyes and ask them what they want, and they will communicate through visual interpretation.
